Second, Allycara. I took her for a teeth cleaning in Jan 2016 and because she was losing weight, and had a balding spot at the base of her spine before her tail - classic hyperthyroid symptoms. They told me her jaw had been broken before (when? and they didn't do x-rays so how could they tell?) The took her blood and said "no, she definitely does not have a thyroid problem." They said feed her wet food and try to fatten her up. I took her back in August because she had a grinding noise when she ate wet food. They said her teeth were fine, again took her blood, and said her thyroid was fine. Around November I took her back again, same symptoms, this time with an ear infection. They gave me drops intended for dogs. I used this and it did absolutely no good. When Filla was dying, they finally told me about Happy Tails. Dr. Shelley is amazing and I highly recommend her instead, especially for cats. Dr. Shelley said Ally's thyroid levels had been increasing, and recommended I take her to see a feline specialist in Atlanta. So I did. Allycara has a broken tooth, as suspected, a completely blocked ear canal, and a very serious hyperthyroid condition. Smalley's was only testing one thyroid level, and that doesn't give the whole picture. Ally's thyroid was so bad that she has liver damage, a heart murmur and blood pressure so high that her vision is threatened. The Atlanta vet put her on thyroid medication, which may take care of the blood pressure and the heart murmur. Ally is too sick to be sedated, so nothing can be done about the broken tooth she's had since at least August or the blocked ear canal she's had since at least November unless she gets better.
I wish I'd never taken either of my cats here. First Filla. I took her in because she was sneezing many times in a row, several times a day, for weeks. They gave her a shot of steroids, and she died less than two weeks later, her lungs filling with fluid.
Even though I waited for a long time, they did decent work. However, I wished I seen at least some type of diversity in the employment. I felt out of place from some of the stares of the customers and staff.
So busy all the time! It can be challenging to get your animal in.
Smalley's Animal Hospital was of no help whatsoever to Allycara. If they had at least told me their thyroid testing is limited, I could have taken Allycara elsewhere sooner. Instead she's been very sick for over a year. I'm still not sure how bad her teeth / jaw is. Filla is dead. She was climbing trees just 2 days before I took her to the vet. She was smart, fierce and could understand human speech. If you love your cats, never take them here. Happy Tails can do exams and most services, and they know enough to know what they can't do and will tell you when you need a specialist.
